Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741 Review

Overview

Technivorm is considered by lot of experts as top of the line drip coffee makers. Their products are hand made in Netherlands and certified by the Specialty Coffee Associations (SCAA) of America and Europe (SCAE). As a bonus they also have the seal of approval of European Coffee Brewing Center (ECBC). All of these and many more are entitled to Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741.

The Moccamaster KBT 741 comes with a 10 cup thermo carafe made of double wall stainless steel. After brewing you can add the screwing thermo insulated cap to hold heat for a long time. Equipped with an exclusive copper thermal element will shut off after the completion of brewing cycle. Another innovation is the 9 hole shower head which disperses the water evenly on the coffee grounds. The filter basket is ripped to allow coffee flow away from the grounds.

The latter has a slider on the side with 3 positions ranging from full, half and close. So you can adjust the flow of the coffee or close it completely to avoid dripping when you pull your carafe from base. A funnel that is placed on top of the carafe directs brewed coffee to the bottom. So the heat is distributed evenly by convection.

Testing

The Moccamaster KBT 741 does 2 important things well. It gets the water hot enough for proper brewing and brews in a very short time. The temperature in the coffee filter is well over 200°F and the brewing time is about 5-6 minutes. A lot of other home coffee makers can do one or another but not both.

So we filled up the reservoir with 1 liter of water and added 60 grams of coffee beans in our grinder. That is the ratio for an optimum result. An accurate kitchen scale is highly recommended for this procedure. Alternatively you can use the supplied scoop. You should simply add 1 level scoops of grounded coffee per 2 cups.

After the grinding was over we added the grounded coffee in the filter container. The carafe was placed on the base which has a switch that is automatically pressed in. So you don’t have to worry that the coffee will drip if the carafe is not properly placed. There are not any kind of flashy screens and a bunch of redundant buttons here. You will find only an essential switch at the bottom of the left side paired with a light indicator. So just power up and let the magic begin!

At first it is better to keep the filter basket slider closed for a while to pre wet the coffee grounds. So they can get saturated and you can fully extract all the taste and aroma. Afterwards you can set it to full. The procedure runs smoothly and lasts less than 6 minutes. When everything is ready you should close the slider to avoid dripping and remove the carafe from base. The heating element will shut off automatically but it is better to switch off the machine manually also. Lastly you should remove the brew through lid and screw the top on tightly for maximum temperature retention.

Some drawbacks about it. The metal carafe will prevent you of seeing the actual content of it so you never know the amount left. We also found the thermal insulation not adequate. Compared to typical thermos the coffee cools down much faster. Additionally we noticed that the water shower head had a tension to drip water mostly at the center. So the coffee sitting around the edge was dry at first. It would get moisturised slowly after the center part. So the center part would soak for more time compared to outer. Maybe closing the filter slider at the beginning would help here. The final product was satisfying enough though!

Verdict

Apart from some minor flaws the KBT 741 is clean, stylish and works! When you see a Moccamaster in someone’s home you know they are serious about coffee. If you are coffee drinker who is satisfied with common pre ground coffee, don’t waste your money. If you prefer all in one machines and are not willing to spend that much, maybe the Keurig K55 or Keurig K575 would suit you better. But if you are into micro roasters and enjoy a wine like coffee experience the Moccamaster KBT 741 is the one you definitely need.
